win 7 + vs2008
  • Omie September 2009
    Hi!

    this is for Renee.

I'm about to migrate to windows 7. When I tried win 7 RC, I installed vs2010beta on it and I got compatibility warning for SQL Server 2008. That was for testing only..
now when I'm going to migrate I'll use vs2008 on it. any issues you came across ? I'll be working on a project, I need a stable environment and I seriously hate vista. I dont have time to hunt for xp drivers for my laptop, would use xp otherwise :(

but I also hate windows 7 appearance :( I dont like fancy eye candy stuff. windows xp + windows classic theme... wasnt that awesomeness ? Its so simple and neat. I dont know why MS is forcing to use their so called nice interface :-(

Hi Omie-I hope you are doing well!

Ugh, Windows 7. I expected the eye candy and it doesn't bother me which is not to say that Windows 7 doesn't bother me. Yes, it's stable but...it has nothing in the way of a status return and techies live on status retutns. In case people were not aware, the business people want no status returns and the techies want plenty. The business people control the money and numerically windows is written for them. Guess what? Visa represented few errors. I never experenced a crash. Windows 7 represents doing away with the error messages. I swear I knew the business would win out but I don't think I guessed this soon, obviousy this has Balmer's hand in it.

There are other problems. The explorer icon for example is settable on one 64 bit system but the panel doesn't show up on the Thinkpad.

Well there is a little more....

" I'll use vs2008 on it. any issues you came across ?"

I have to admit I haven't gone much further and need pushing especially with databases. Today was "names day" and I had to ascetain that .mdb was Access and .mdf was SQL. I do know deeper things but names will sometime screw me up. So at this point, I appreciate a challenge. I have yet to use SQL on anything accept what I wrote before the accident and all that works well. You know and I know that string of luck can't hold up much longer.

I don't know. It's been a long time since XP for me. Yes, I remember what at looked like but you'll find the windows development world is bifurcated into 1.) XP and 2.) the latest and greatest. The people I have been involved with have all been people like Ken Tucker who are unquestionably in the latter camp. I've been to Vista Land for eons before I went to system 7.

I always tried to use what is latest Renee :)

but when Vista came out, I couldnt afford upgrading my desktop, its a P4 1.9 + 1 gig ram machine. Vista _is bad for it. I was with xp.. last year I got this dell studio 15 laptop that came with Vista Home Premium... been on Vista since then..

But I've been a long time user of XP with Windows Classic theme. I like simplicity.... to that extent. Vista bugs me alot.. way too many services.. many times I see my HDD work led is lighting constantly when am not doing any work.. Tried stopping indexing, monitors.. dunno what it still looks for :-(

I liked windows 7's performance in RC. Now I've installed RTM in partition, let see.. will be using it side-by-side for ~a month and slowly migrate to it..

I liked Vista far far better than I like windows 7. Particularly, Windows 7 returns little feedback useable by technical people who are in the process of developing or repairing a systems.
