Good books about .NET
  • Kenneth Haugland September 2009
Well... I do have a multitude of books about .NET... And... As usual I havent had the time to read them all back to back.... So Im just going to post the books I have and if some of you have some better advice please let me know...

Programming Visual Basic .NET by Francesco Balena
A total of 1500 pages makes it a heavy load in a backpack, but a little old...

Andrew Trolsens book Pro VB 2008 is a better read... and he has a good sence of humor...

Having a Master degree in Acoustics has lead me to purshade many books about numerical methods as well...
Practical Numerical Methods with C# by Jack Xu... The lazy mans guide to learning numerical methods.... in C# but easyly trenslated to VB...
Numerical Simulations and Case Studies using C++.NET... Code was usless to me in VB, but the explanation of the methods was really good...

One of the best books I've read on .NET is ....

CLR vis C# by Wintellects Jeff Richter

It's a brilliant book. It's about how the .NETs runtime system works. It will make you a better programmer.

    Another good book is...

Clean Code by Robert C Martin (Uncle Bob)

It's based on Java but it discussed ways to write really minimalistic and readable code.

Everywhere on the internet "Code Complete" tops the Best Books list. Its not specifically related to .NET programming, it covers how to write nice code, ethics, models etc. Its said that every programmer should read it atleast once.

I never even seen it but once I checked it contents on Amazon[i think] and found it covers all the same things I learned in college only.

I'm from a city where I dont get these books, need to get them from ~400Km away [Bombay/Mumbai]. Even my college library dont have these. It only keeps suggested reference books relevant to courses offered :(

I have Code Complete... it's MASSIVE!! It's everything ever.... but it's not .NET specific but that means you should read it.

worth a read for sure.... let me ask yous a rhetorical question... do you know how to write an IF statement?

    Well actually NO.. you don't.

A colleague of mine has Code Complete. It really is comprehensive and pretty well written. Unfortunately I am so focused on .NET I don't turn to it first

Hmmm... Apperently it is more complex than I thought
